Love the Earth? We do, too.
We know that the global fast-fashion industry is a serious threat to the environment. To reduce our impact on climate change, we are proud to offer Salty Bird’s first collection using ECONYL® regenerated nylon which is made from nylon waste such as fishing nets, fabric scraps, carpet flooring and other indusrial plastic and REPREVE® polyester made from recycled post-consumer plastic.
ECONYL® Thread ~ Monochrome Fabric
ECONYL® is a high-quality Italian recycled nylon made from 100% regenerated fiber from fishing nets, ocean plastics and scraps from fabric mills, gathered by various worldwide initiatives and regenerated via depolymerization to return the nylon to its virgin form. High-performance ECONYL® is chlorine resilient, UPF 50+ and lasts five times longer than regular fabrics. Produced using energy efficient methods, ECONYL® looks and feels like regular nylon, can be recycled again and again, and is free from any harmful chemicals.
The environmental benefits of switching to regenerated nylon are significant. Every 10,000 tons of ECONYL® eliminates 12.6 thousand tons of waste, saves 70,000 barrels of crude oil, and limits 57,000 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions. The use of ECONYL® reduces the global warming impact of nylon by up to 80% compared to regular petroleum-based nylon from non-recycled sources.
Regenerated ECONYL® nylon fiber thread is ultimately transformed into textile yarn to make VITA unicolor fabrics, by Carvico. The fabric content is 80% Recycled Nylon and 20% Spandex. Salty Bird is proud to use VITA fabric made from ECONYL® thread for the monochrome fabrics in all our swimwear designs.
REPREVE® - Printed Fabric
Widely certified as one of the most earth-friendly fibers available, REPREVE® fabric is made from high-quality polyester yarns generated from 100% recycled materials, including post-consumer plastic bottles and pre-consumer industrial waste. Fabric content is 80% Recycled Polyester; 20% Spandex. The production of REPREVE® reduces the consumption of energy by 45%, water by 20% and greenhouse gas emissions by over 30% as compared with producing virgin polyester. Salty Bird uses upcycled REPREVE® for the printed fabrics in all our swimwear.
Plant-Based Packaging
An estimated 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. It’s no secret that consumer packaging contributes significantly to that staggering number. That’s why Salty Bird partners with AVANI for all of our swimwear packaging, using compostable, biodegradable Bio-cassava bags as a plant-based alternative to petroleum-based plastic. Thanks to AVANI’s eco-friendly technology, Salty Bird packaging can be mixed with your compost and biodegrades in 60 to 90 days.
